Công thức

Tóm ý trước	This / These + N tóm tắt + V … This trend is likely to continue.
Loại / kiểu như vậy	such (a/an) + N Such policies are expensive to enforce.
Hai đối tượng	the former + … , + the latter + … Rail and air are popular; the former is greener, the latter faster.
Thay động từ	S + do so / do the same If firms are asked to cut emissions, most will do so.
Thay danh từ đếm được	a / the / adj + one / ones Small classes are better than large ones.

Cách dùng

This + danh từ tóm tắt (this issue, this approach)
Some schools have banned phones. This approach has improved concentration. – Một số trường cấm điện thoại. Cách làm này đã cải thiện sự tập trung.
Such + N: chỉ loại sự việc vừa nhắc
Fines for littering are common, but such penalties rarely change behaviour. – Phạt xả rác khá phổ biến, nhưng những hình phạt như vậy hiếm khi thay đổi hành vi.
The former / the latter
Students can study online or on campus; the latter offers more social contact. – Sinh viên có thể học trực tuyến hoặc tại trường; cách thứ hai có nhiều giao tiếp xã hội hơn.
Do so: tránh lặp lại cả cụm động từ
Governments should regulate AI, and they must do so quickly. – Chính phủ nên quản lý AI, và phải làm điều đó nhanh chóng.
That of / those of trong so sánh (Task 1)
The population of Lagos is larger than that of Cairo. – Dân số Lagos lớn hơn dân số Cairo.

Thay thế cho	Từ dùng	Ví dụ
Danh từ đếm được số ít	one	a cheap phone and an expensive one
Danh từ đếm được số nhiều	ones	old buildings and new ones
Danh từ không đếm được / số ít trong so sánh	that (of)	the cost of housing is higher than that of food
Danh từ số nhiều trong so sánh	those (of)	wages in cities are higher than those in villages
Cụm động từ	do so / do the same	Others may do so.
Cả mệnh đề	so / not	Will prices rise? I think so / I hope not.

💡 Đừng để “This” đứng một mình nếu người đọc có thể hiểu nhầm nó chỉ cái gì. “This rise”, “This problem”, “These measures” rõ ràng hơn nhiều so với chỉ “This”.

Lỗi hay gặp

❌ ~~Living costs in London are higher than Manchester.~~
✅ Living costs in London are higher than those in Manchester.
Phải so chi phí với chi phí. Dùng those thay cho living costs (số nhiều).

❌ ~~I prefer the red car to the blue.~~
✅ I prefer the red car to the blue one.
Sau tính từ cần one/ones để thay danh từ đếm được, không để tính từ đứng một mình.

❌ ~~Some people use public transport, the other people drive. The latter is cheaper.~~
✅ Some people use public transport, while others drive. The former is cheaper.
Public transport (nhắc trước) rẻ hơn → the former. Cũng tránh lặp “people” bằng others.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Giám khảo đánh giá “referencing” ở band 7+: dùng linh hoạt this/such/these + N thay cho lặp danh từ. Tuy nhiên, lạm dụng the former/the latter có thể khiến bài khó đọc.
