She used to smoke. → She no longer smokes. / She doesn't smoke any more.

Lần đầu ↔ chưa từngThis is the first time + S + have/has + V3

Cách dùng

  1. Because + mệnh đề ↔ because of / due to + cụm danh từ
    The flight was cancelled because of the storm. – Chuyến bay bị hủy vì bão.
  2. Prefer A to B ↔ would rather A than B
    I would rather cook at home than eat out. – Tôi thích nấu ăn ở nhà hơn là ăn ngoài.
  3. Chủ động ↔ bị động
    The new library was opened by the mayor. – Thư viện mới được thị trưởng khai trương.
  4. So sánh hơn ↔ so sánh nhất
    No other city in the country is as expensive as London. – Không thành phố nào trong nước đắt đỏ bằng London.
  5. Such + (a) + adj + N + that
    It was such a boring lecture that half the audience left. – Đó là một bài giảng chán đến mức một nửa khán giả bỏ về.

💡 Khi viết lại, kiểm tra 3 điều: (1) nghĩa giữ nguyên, (2) thì giữ nguyên, (3) loại từ đi sau cấu trúc mới (despite + N/V-ing, because + mệnh đề, would rather + V nguyên mẫu).

Lỗi hay gặp

❌ Despite it was expensive, she bought the dress.
✅ Despite the fact that it was expensive / Although it was expensive, she bought the dress.
Despite không đi trực tiếp với mệnh đề; cần N, V-ing hoặc the fact that.

❌ The coffee was too hot for me to drink it.
✅ The coffee was too hot for me to drink.
Khi chủ ngữ cũng là tân ngữ của động từ sau too…to, bỏ tân ngữ "it".

❌ I would rather to stay at home.
✅ I would rather stay at home.
Would rather + V nguyên mẫu không to.
