Tường thuật câu hỏi Yes/No (if/whether) và Wh- (trật tự câu khẳng định), mệnh lệnh – yêu cầu (tell/ask sb to V), và các động từ tường thuật đi kèm cấu trúc riêng: suggest, advise, deny, accuse, apologise, promise.

Công thức

Câu hỏi Yes/No	S + asked (sb) + if / whether + S + V (lùi thì) The examiner asked whether I had studied abroad.
Câu hỏi Wh-	S + asked / wanted to know + Wh- + S + V (lùi thì) She wanted to know how long the course lasted.
Mệnh lệnh / yêu cầu	S + told / asked + sb + (not) to V The invigilator told us not to turn over the paper.
Động từ + V-ing	S + denied / admitted / suggested + V-ing The minister denied knowing about the payments.
Động từ + sb + giới từ + V-ing	S + accused + sb + of + V-ing The journalist accused the company of hiding the truth.

Cách dùng

Suggest + V-ing / suggest that + S + (should) V
My tutor suggested that I (should) read more editorials. – Gia sư gợi ý tôi nên đọc nhiều bài xã luận hơn.
Advise / warn / remind / encourage + sb + to V
The doctor advised him to cut down on sugar. – Bác sĩ khuyên anh ấy giảm đường.
Apologise (to sb) for + V-ing
The airline apologised for cancelling the flight. – Hãng bay xin lỗi vì đã hủy chuyến bay.
Promise / agree / refuse / offer + to V
The council promised to repair the road by June. – Hội đồng hứa sửa đường trước tháng Sáu.
Thank / blame / congratulate + sb + for / on + V-ing
They congratulated her on winning the award. – Họ chúc mừng cô ấy đã giành giải thưởng.

Cấu trúc	Động từ
+ to V	promise, agree, refuse, offer, threaten
+ sb + to V	tell, ask, advise, warn, remind, encourage, persuade
+ V-ing	deny, admit, suggest, recommend
+ (sb) + giới từ + V-ing	apologise for, accuse sb of, blame sb for, insist on, congratulate sb on
+ that + mệnh đề	explain, suggest, admit, insist, complain

💡 Câu hỏi tường thuật KHÔNG còn dấu hỏi và KHÔNG đảo trợ động từ: He asked where the station WAS (không phải "where was the station?").

Lỗi hay gặp

❌ ~~She asked me where did I live.~~
✅ She asked me where I lived.
Câu hỏi tường thuật dùng trật tự câu khẳng định, bỏ did.

❌ ~~He suggested me to apply for the job.~~
✅ He suggested that I apply for the job. / He suggested applying for the job.
Suggest không theo mẫu sb + to V.

❌ ~~The man denied to steal the wallet.~~
✅ The man denied stealing the wallet.
Deny + V-ing.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Động từ tường thuật (claim, argue, suggest, deny, admit) giúp trình bày quan điểm người khác trong Task 2 thay vì chỉ "say". Trong Speaking Part 3, tường thuật lại ý kiến người khác cũng là cách thể hiện range.
