🎩 Thành ngữ & văn phong (Idioms & Register) · B2

Văn phong (register) quyết định chọn từ: Writing cần trang trọng – từ một chữ thay cụm động từ thân mật (find out → discover), không rút gọn (do not), câu khách quan (It could be argued that…), tránh thành ngữ sáo rỗng. Speaking cho phép thân mật hơn, và 1–2 thành ngữ tự nhiên, đúng ngữ cảnh sẽ giúp tăng điểm Lexical Resource.

Cách dùng

  1. a piece of cake – rất dễ
    The first part of the test was a piece of cake. – Phần đầu bài kiểm tra dễ như ăn bánh.
  2. once in a blue moon – rất hiếm khi
    I eat fast food once in a blue moon. – Hiếm lắm tôi mới ăn đồ ăn nhanh.
  3. hit the books – học hành chăm chỉ
    I need to hit the books before my exam next week. – Tôi cần học chăm trước kỳ thi tuần sau.
  4. under the weather – hơi mệt, không khỏe
    I was feeling a bit under the weather last weekend. – Cuối tuần trước tôi thấy hơi mệt.
  5. over the moon – vô cùng vui sướng
    My mum was over the moon when I passed my driving test. – Mẹ tôi vui mừng khôn xiết khi tôi thi đỗ bằng lái.
  6. cost an arm and a leg – rất đắt
    Renting a flat in the city centre costs an arm and a leg. – Thuê căn hộ ở trung tâm thành phố đắt cắt cổ.
  7. on the same page – cùng quan điểm, hiểu ý nhau

💡 Rút gọn (contractions): Writing Task 1 & 2 viết đầy đủ do not, it is, cannot, will not thay vì don't, it's, can't, won't. Trong Speaking, dạng rút gọn là tự nhiên và nên dùng.
💡 Phrasal verb không bị cấm trong Writing – carry out, set up, point out, rely on đều trang trọng. Nhưng khi có động từ một chữ tương đương, hãy ưu tiên: look into → investigate, put up with → tolerate, come up with → devise / propose.

Lỗi hay gặp

❌ Kids nowadays get way too much homework.
✅ Children nowadays are given an excessive amount of homework.
Writing: tránh kids, get, way too much – dùng từ vựng trang trọng.

❌ Pollution is a big problem and governments should do something about it ASAP.
✅ Pollution is a serious problem, and governments should take action as soon as possible.
Tránh từ viết tắt (ASAP) và cụm mơ hồ (do something) trong văn học thuật.

❌ Every cloud has a silver lining, so unemployment can be good.
✅ Although unemployment has serious drawbacks, it may encourage some people to retrain.
Thành ngữ sáo rỗng trong Task 2 bị coi là thiếu học thuật; hãy diễn đạt ý cụ thể.

❌ The government can't ignore this issue, and it's time to act.
✅ The government cannot ignore this issue, and it is time to act.
Không dùng dạng rút gọn trong bài viết học thuật.

Ứng dụng trong IELTS

Speaking: dùng 1–2 thành ngữ tự nhiên, đúng ngữ cảnh để tăng Lexical Resource; dùng gượng ép hoặc sai nghĩa sẽ bị trừ điểm. Writing Task 2: tránh thành ngữ sáo rỗng (every cloud has a silver lining, at the end of the day), tránh từ lóng và dạng rút gọn; ưu tiên câu khách quan.
