Model answer
In the past, grandparents were often closely involved in bringing up their grandchildren, but this is becoming less common in many families today. Although this change has some benefits, I believe it is largely a negative development.
There are some positive aspects to this trend. Parents who raise their children without relying on the older generation can apply their own parenting methods, avoiding disagreements over discipline or diet. In addition, grandparents themselves may enjoy a more active retirement, with time to travel, pursue hobbies or continue working. For example, many retired people today take up volunteering or learn new skills rather than spending every day looking after toddlers.
However, children lose a great deal when grandparents play a smaller role. Grandparents pass on family history, traditions and values, helping children to develop a sense of identity and belonging. They also offer patience and emotional support at times when busy parents are under pressure. A child who hears stories about how their grandparents grew up gains a deeper understanding of the past and learns to respect older people.
Furthermore, the decline in grandparents' involvement places extra burdens on families and society. Without help from relatives, working parents must pay for expensive childcare, or one parent may have to give up their career, which reduces the family's income and the country's skilled workforce. Meanwhile, elderly people who have less contact with their families are more likely to suffer from loneliness, which can harm their physical and mental health.
In conclusion, while the reduced role of grandparents gives parents and older people greater independence, I believe the loss of intergenerational bonds makes this a mainly negative trend.
