IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Two-part question · 283 words
Model answer
Across much of the world, young people are abandoning small towns and villages in search of a new life in major cities. This migration is driven mainly by economic and social opportunities, but targeted investment could make rural areas far more appealing.
The primary reason is the lack of employment in the countryside. Agriculture, traditionally the main source of rural jobs, has become increasingly mechanised, and few modern industries set up operations outside urban centres. As a result, ambitious graduates feel they must move to cities to find well-paid positions and build careers. Furthermore, cities offer better universities, hospitals and entertainment, as well as a more vibrant social life. In Vietnam, for example, millions of young people from the provinces have moved to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, lured by factory jobs and higher education.
Several measures could encourage young people to stay or return. Firstly, governments should invest in high-speed internet, which would allow young professionals to work remotely for city-based companies while enjoying lower living costs. Secondly, tax breaks and grants could attract businesses to rural regions and support young entrepreneurs who wish to start their own ventures, such as eco-tourism or organic farming. Thirdly, improving local schools, clinics and transport links would make the countryside a more attractive place to raise a family.
Cultural life matters too. Funding for community centres, sports facilities and festivals would help rural areas shed their image as dull places with nothing to do.
In conclusion, young people leave rural areas mainly because of limited jobs and services. By improving digital infrastructure, supporting local businesses and enriching community life, governments can breathe new life into the countryside and slow the exodus to the cities.
