IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample

Global streaming platforms now allow audiences from Seoul to São Paulo to watch the same series on the very day it is released. Although some fear that this could erode local cultures, I believe the overall impact is positive.
The greatest benefit is that shared entertainment fosters cross-cultural understanding. When viewers watch stories set in other countries, they gain insight into different customs, values and ways of life. Moreover, streaming has given film-makers from smaller industries access to a worldwide audience. South Korean dramas and Spanish thrillers, for instance, have achieved international success that would have been unthinkable twenty years ago, sparking interest in the languages, food and tourism of those countries.
On the other hand, critics worry about cultural homogenisation. Because a few large companies decide which content is promoted, productions from wealthy markets, especially the United States, may dominate viewing habits and crowd out local cinema. Young people might become more familiar with American high schools than with their own traditions, and small domestic studios may struggle to compete with enormous budgets. Some languages and art forms could gradually fade into obscurity as a result.
However, I believe this risk can be managed. Several countries already require streaming services to invest a proportion of their revenue in locally produced content, which supports national industries while still giving viewers choice. Furthermore, the success of non-English productions shows that global platforms do not simply export one culture; they also allow diverse voices to travel in both directions.
In conclusion, while the dominance of a few platforms raises legitimate concerns, the ability of people worldwide to share stories is a positive development, provided that governments safeguard local production.
