IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Problem–Solution · 285 words
Model answer
For many teenagers today, the news arrives not in newspapers or bulletins but in sixty-second clips scrolled through on a phone. This habit raises several concerns, but they can be reduced through education and better platform design.
The most obvious problem is that short videos oversimplify complex issues. A topic such as inflation or a war cannot be explained properly in under a minute, so viewers are left with a superficial understanding and strong opinions based on very little evidence. In addition, anyone can post such clips, which means that unverified claims often look just as credible as professional journalism. A dramatic video taken out of context can be shared millions of times before any correction appears. Finally, recommendation algorithms tend to show users more of what they already agree with, trapping them in echo chambers. Over time, this can harden political divisions and make compromise harder.
Several measures could mitigate these problems. Firstly, schools should teach media literacy as a core skill, training students to check the source of a claim and to compare reports from different outlets. Secondly, platforms could attach links to reliable background articles beneath news-related videos and clearly label content from anonymous accounts. Thirdly, viral videos making serious factual claims could be temporarily slowed down until fact-checkers have reviewed them. Meanwhile, established news organisations should meet young audiences where they are by producing accurate, engaging short videos of their own, as several international broadcasters have already begun to do.
In conclusion, short-form news can distort young people's understanding of the world, but a combination of critical thinking, responsible platform design and quality journalism can turn a weakness into a strength, equipping a generation of digital natives to become better-informed citizens.
