IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Discussion · 288 words
Model answer
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work, and opinions differ sharply about its effect on employment. While some believe it will create more jobs than it eliminates, others fear mass unemployment. This essay will discuss both views before arguing that AI is likely to create new opportunities, provided that workers are helped to adapt.
Those who are pessimistic point out that AI can now perform tasks once thought to require human intelligence. Chatbots handle customer service, software translates documents and algorithms analyse legal contracts, threatening white-collar as well as manual jobs. For instance, many banks have already cut staff in call centres after introducing automated assistants. If such changes happen quickly, millions could be left without work.
On the other hand, optimists note that technological revolutions have always created more jobs than they destroyed. When computers replaced typists, entirely new professions such as web design and data analysis emerged. Similarly, AI is already generating demand for machine learning engineers, data specialists and people who oversee and improve AI systems. By boosting productivity, it may also lower costs and stimulate economic growth, leading to new businesses.
In my opinion, the optimistic view is more convincing in the long term, but the transition will be painful for some. The new jobs will require different skills, so a middle-aged clerk who loses his position cannot easily retrain as a programmer. Governments must therefore invest in lifelong learning and provide a safety net for displaced workers. Programmes that offer free online courses in digital skills, for example, could help such workers move into growing sectors.
In conclusion, although AI will make certain jobs obsolete, I believe it will create more opportunities overall, as long as societies prepare their workforce for change.
