IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Advantages–Disadvantages · 285 words
Model answer
Remote working has become increasingly common, particularly since the pandemic forced companies to adapt. Although working from home has certain drawbacks, I believe that its advantages clearly outweigh them for both employees and employers.
Admittedly, remote work can take a toll on social interaction. Employees who rarely meet their colleagues may feel isolated, and spontaneous exchanges of ideas that happen in an office are harder to replicate online. Moreover, some people struggle to separate their work and home lives, ending up working longer hours and checking emails late into the evening. For instance, junior staff may find it difficult to learn from experienced colleagues when communication is limited to video calls.
However, the benefits for workers are considerable. Eliminating the daily commute saves time and money and reduces stress, while flexible schedules allow parents to balance work with childcare. Someone who previously spent two hours a day in traffic can devote that time to exercise, family or rest, which often boosts productivity. Many employees also concentrate better at home, away from the noise and interruptions of an open-plan office.
Employers and society also stand to gain. Companies can cut the cost of renting large offices and recruit talented staff regardless of where they live. At the same time, fewer cars on the road means less congestion and pollution in big cities. As for the problem of isolation, it can largely be overcome through hybrid arrangements, in which staff come to the office one or two days a week.
In conclusion, while working from home may reduce face-to-face contact, its benefits in terms of time, cost, flexibility and the environment are far more significant. I therefore believe that the advantages of this trend outweigh its disadvantages.
