IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Agree/Disagree · 281 words
Model answer
As more of our lives move online, crimes such as hacking and identity theft have become increasingly common. I completely agree that these offences should be punished as severely as physical crimes like burglary.
The main reason is that the harm caused by cybercrime is just as real as that caused by a break-in. Victims of identity theft may lose their life savings, have their credit ruined and spend months proving their innocence to banks. The psychological impact is also serious: many feel violated and anxious, just as burglary victims do. For example, elderly people who are tricked into revealing their bank details often lose trust in using any online service.
Moreover, online crimes can affect far more people than a single burglary. One hacker can steal the data of millions of customers in a single attack or shut down hospitals and power networks. Ransomware attacks on hospitals, for instance, have delayed surgery and put lives at risk. Burglars, by contrast, can only target one home at a time, so the scale of damage from cybercrime is often far greater.
Some argue that cybercrime is less serious because it involves no physical violence. However, burglary is often non-violent too, yet it is treated seriously because it violates people's privacy and property. Lighter sentences for online crime would also send the message that it is a low-risk, high-reward activity, encouraging more criminals to turn to the internet. Furthermore, online criminals are notoriously difficult to trace, so strong penalties are needed to act as a deterrent.
In conclusion, since hacking and identity theft can cause severe financial and emotional damage on a massive scale, they deserve penalties equal to those for physical crimes.
