IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample

In many parts of the world, traditional costumes are increasingly giving way to jeans, T-shirts and global brands. This essay will explain why this shift is occurring and argue that, although it has some advantages, it is mainly a negative trend.
There are two main reasons for this change. Firstly, international fashion is practical and affordable. Traditional garments are often expensive, time-consuming to make and unsuitable for modern jobs, whereas mass-produced clothing is cheap and comfortable. Secondly, globalisation and the media spread Western styles everywhere. Young people who watch foreign films and follow international celebrities online naturally want to dress like their idols, so they associate traditional clothes with older generations.
Admittedly, this trend is not without benefits. Global fashion gives people greater freedom of choice and allows them to express their individuality. It also creates jobs in the clothing industry of developing countries. For example, a young woman can wear smart casual clothes to the office during the week and still choose traditional dress for weddings or national holidays.
Nevertheless, I believe the disadvantages outweigh these benefits. Traditional dress is a visible symbol of national identity and history, and when it disappears, part of a community's cultural heritage is lost. Moreover, the skills of local tailors and weavers may die out as demand falls. For example, in some regions, handwoven fabrics that were once worn daily are now seen only in museums or at festivals. This would leave future generations with a poorer understanding of their roots.
In conclusion, traditional clothing is declining because global fashion is cheaper, more convenient and heavily promoted by the media. Although this offers more choice, it threatens cultural diversity, so traditional dress deserves to be actively preserved.
