In the age of social media, singers, actors and online influencers shape the attitudes and behaviour of young people more than ever before. Although this influence can sometimes be beneficial, I believe it is largely a negative development.

Admittedly, some celebrities use their fame for good causes. When a famous footballer speaks openly about mental health or a popular singer campaigns against plastic waste, millions of teenagers may pay attention to issues they would otherwise ignore. For instance, charity appeals backed by well-known stars often raise far more money than ordinary campaigns. Such examples show that fame can raise awareness of important social issues.

However, the overall effect of celebrity culture is more harmful than helpful. Firstly, celebrities are often admired for their wealth and appearance rather than for their talent or character, which encourages young people to value image over substance. Secondly, many influencers promote products such as expensive fashion or unhealthy diet supplements, turning their followers into impulsive consumers. Edited photos on Instagram, for example, have been linked to low self-esteem and eating disorders among teenage girls.

Moreover, celebrity influence can undermine the role of parents and teachers. When a famous person dismisses the value of education or glamorises risky behaviour, young fans may copy them without question, since they lack the experience to judge such messages critically. Viral online challenges promoted by influencers, for example, have led some teenagers to injure themselves while trying to gain likes and followers.

In conclusion, while a minority of celebrities act as positive role models, their growing influence mainly encourages materialism and unrealistic expectations. Young people therefore need guidance to follow famous figures more critically.
