IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Agree/Disagree · 281 words
Model answer
Technological progress has already changed the way police work, and some people believe that future innovations will make crime much easier to prevent and solve. While I agree that technology will be a powerful tool for law enforcement, I do not think it will make the task dramatically easier.
There is little doubt that new technologies will help the police in many ways. Surveillance cameras combined with facial recognition software can identify suspects within minutes, while DNA analysis is becoming faster and cheaper. Artificial intelligence can also analyse patterns in crime data to predict where offences are likely to occur, allowing officers to be deployed more effectively. For example, several cold cases from decades ago have recently been solved by comparing old DNA samples with genealogy databases.
However, criminals will also take advantage of technological advances. The rise of the internet has already created entirely new forms of crime, such as online fraud, ransomware attacks and the sale of illegal goods on the dark web. These offences can be committed from anywhere in the world, making offenders extremely difficult to track down and prosecute. Tools such as encrypted messaging and cryptocurrencies, for instance, allow criminal networks to communicate and move money without leaving a clear trail.
Moreover, technology cannot address the root causes of crime. Poverty, addiction and lack of education drive many offences, and no camera or algorithm can remove these social problems. Excessive surveillance also raises serious concerns about privacy.
In conclusion, although technology will undoubtedly strengthen the ability of the police to prevent and solve crimes, criminals will adapt just as quickly. I therefore believe that fighting crime will remain a constant challenge rather than become much easier.
