IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Advantages–Disadvantages · 270 words
Model answer
A growing number of young people are choosing to pursue their degrees overseas. Although this choice involves certain difficulties, I believe that the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
Admittedly, studying abroad can be a daunting experience. International students often pay significantly higher tuition fees than local students, in addition to the cost of accommodation and travel. Many also struggle with homesickness and culture shock, especially in their first year, when they must adapt to unfamiliar food, weather and teaching methods.
However, these challenges are usually temporary, whereas the advantages last a lifetime. Firstly, living in another country is one of the most effective ways to achieve fluency in a foreign language, since students use it every day both inside and outside the classroom. For example, a student who arrives in the UK with intermediate English may become confident enough to write academic essays and give presentations within a year or two. Secondly, managing their own finances and solving problems without family support helps young people become more independent and resilient. These qualities are just as valuable as academic knowledge.
In addition, an overseas degree can significantly enhance career prospects. Employers place a high value on graduates who have international experience and cross-cultural communication skills, particularly in multinational companies. For example, a Vietnamese student who completes an engineering degree in Australia gains not only up-to-date technical knowledge but also a network of contacts that may lead to job opportunities at home and abroad.
In conclusion, while studying abroad requires considerable financial and emotional investment, the linguistic, personal and professional benefits make it a worthwhile choice for those who have the opportunity.
