IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Problem–Solution · 276 words
Model answer
In many parts of the world, a large number of young people are unable to find work after leaving school or university. This trend has worsened as economies change and many entry-level jobs disappear. This essay will discuss the problems this causes for individuals and society, and propose measures to tackle it.
Youth unemployment has serious consequences at both a personal and a social level. For individuals, long periods without work lead to financial dependence on parents, a loss of confidence and, in some cases, depression. Young people who miss out on early work experience may also earn less throughout their careers. For society, high youth unemployment means wasted talent and lower tax revenue, while frustration among the young can fuel crime and social unrest. For instance, several large protests in recent decades were driven largely by young people who felt shut out of the job market.
Governments, schools and employers all have a role to play in reducing the problem. Firstly, education systems should be more closely aligned with the needs of the labour market, offering vocational training and practical skills alongside academic subjects. Germany's apprenticeship system, in which students divide their time between the classroom and the workplace, has helped keep youth unemployment low. Secondly, governments could offer tax incentives to companies that hire young people and provide support for those who wish to start their own businesses, such as low-interest loans and mentoring.
In conclusion, youth unemployment damages young people's prospects and well-being and places a burden on society as a whole. A combination of relevant education, practical training and financial incentives is needed to help the younger generation enter the workforce successfully.
