IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Positive/Negative · 277 words
Model answer
In the digital age, people routinely hand over personal details such as their names, addresses and card numbers in order to shop, bank and stay in touch online. Although this practice carries real risks, I believe it is on balance a positive development.
The main advantage is the remarkable convenience it offers. By sharing their information with trusted platforms, users can pay bills in seconds, receive goods at their doorstep and keep in touch with friends abroad at almost no cost. This saves a great deal of time and is especially valuable for elderly or disabled people who have difficulty travelling. For example, mobile banking apps now allow people in rural areas without a nearby branch to access financial services for the first time, helping them save money and run small businesses more efficiently.
Admittedly, sharing personal data online exposes users to identity theft and fraud. Data breaches at large companies have leaked millions of passwords, and some firms sell customers' information to advertisers without clear consent. However, these dangers can be greatly reduced. Strong data protection laws, such as the European Union's GDPR, hold companies accountable for misuse, while tools like two-factor authentication make accounts much harder to hack.
Furthermore, users themselves can take simple precautions, such as using different passwords and avoiding suspicious links. As digital literacy improves, people are becoming more selective about what they share, which suggests that the risks are manageable rather than inevitable.
In conclusion, while sharing personal information online is not without danger, its benefits in terms of convenience and access to services are considerable. With proper regulation and careful behaviour, I believe this trend does more good than harm.
