IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Discussion · 279 words
Model answer
It is often claimed that modern technology has made everyday life more stressful and confusing, while others insist that it has simplified almost every task. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe technology has, on balance, made life easier.
Those who feel that technology complicates life have a valid point. Smartphones keep people constantly connected, so work emails and messages intrude into evenings and weekends, blurring the line between work and rest. Moreover, people must now manage dozens of passwords, apps and software updates, which can be particularly frustrating for older users. For example, a simple task such as booking a doctor's appointment may now require downloading an app and creating an online account.
However, I side with those who believe that technology has made life considerably easier. Tasks that once took hours, such as paying bills, transferring money or finding information, can now be completed in a matter of seconds. Communication has also become faster and cheaper, allowing families separated by thousands of kilometres to stay in touch through video calls. In addition, navigation apps help drivers avoid traffic jams, and online banking means that people no longer have to queue at a branch during their lunch break.
In my view, the complications that technology creates stem largely from how we use it rather than from the technology itself. Individuals can set clear boundaries, for instance by switching off notifications after work, while designers can make services more user-friendly for elderly people.
In conclusion, although technology brings new sources of stress, its benefits in terms of speed, convenience and connection are far greater. Used wisely, it makes our lives simpler rather than more complicated.
