IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample

Model answer
Opinions differ on whether education should mainly serve the needs of society or help individuals fulfil their own ambitions. While both aims are important, I believe that a good education system should pursue them together, with personal development taking slight precedence.
Those who see education as a tool for serving society have a valid point. Governments invest heavily in schools and universities, so it is reasonable for them to expect a return on that investment in the form of skilled doctors, engineers and teachers. Education also instils shared values such as respect for the law and civic responsibility, which hold communities together. For example, countries facing a shortage of nurses often expand training places to meet public demand.
On the other hand, others argue that education should above all help people realise their potential. Every person has different talents and dreams, and education should give them the freedom to explore these. Students who study subjects they are passionate about tend to be more motivated, more creative and ultimately more successful. A system that channels everyone into "useful" careers risks producing unhappy workers and stifling talent in areas such as art, music or philosophy, where the benefits are not always immediately visible.
In my opinion, these two goals are not mutually exclusive. When individuals are free to pursue their interests, they usually contribute more to society, not less. Many groundbreaking innovations, from new medicines to popular apps, came from people who followed their curiosity rather than a career plan imposed by others.
In conclusion, although education must equip people with skills that society needs, it should primarily help them achieve their personal goals, since fulfilled individuals are the greatest asset any society can have.
