IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Agree/Disagree · 275 words
Model answer
The rapid growth of online resources has led some people to predict that schools will soon become obsolete. I completely disagree with this view, as schools provide far more than just access to information.
It is true that the internet has transformed the way people learn. Students can now watch lectures by leading experts, take online courses and find answers to almost any question within seconds. For instance, many learners have mastered programming or foreign languages entirely through free websites and video tutorials. In addition, digital platforms allow people in remote areas to gain access to high-quality materials that were once available only to students in major cities.
However, access to information is not the same as education. Children need teachers to guide their learning, explain difficult concepts and help them distinguish reliable sources from misleading ones. Without this support, most young learners lack the discipline to study independently and are easily distracted by games and social media. Indeed, when schools closed during the pandemic, many students fell behind, particularly those from poorer families.
Moreover, schools play a vital role in children's social development. In the classroom and the playground, pupils learn to cooperate with others, resolve conflicts and respect different opinions, which are essential skills for adult life. Schools also provide a safe environment where children are supervised while their parents are at work. Group projects and team sports, for example, teach children how to share responsibilities and work towards a common goal.
In conclusion, although online information is a valuable supplement to classroom learning, it cannot replace schools. Rather than disappearing, schools are likely to adapt by integrating digital tools into their teaching.
