IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample

Model answer
In a growing number of countries, fathers are choosing to stay at home and raise their children while their partners pursue full-time careers. In my view, this is a largely positive development for families and for society.
The most obvious benefit is that children develop closer bonds with their fathers. For generations, men were often absent from daily family life because they were expected to be the sole breadwinner. When fathers take on the role of main carer, children benefit from a different style of attention and grow up seeing that caring is not only a woman's job. Boys in particular gain a positive role model who shows that tenderness and patience are not signs of weakness. Research in Sweden, where paternity leave is generous, suggests that involved fathers contribute to children's confidence and emotional stability.
Furthermore, this trend promotes gender equality in the workplace. Talented women no longer have to sacrifice their careers after having children, which means that companies can retain skilled employees and the economy makes full use of its workforce. In families where the mother earns a higher income, it is also simply a sensible financial decision for the father to stay at home, as the household maximises its income.
It must be acknowledged that stay-at-home fathers sometimes face social stigma and may feel isolated, as most parenting groups are still dominated by mothers. However, these difficulties stem from outdated attitudes rather than from the arrangement itself, and they are likely to fade as the practice becomes more common.
In conclusion, I believe that fathers staying at home is a welcome change, as it strengthens family relationships and gives women fairer opportunities at work. Society should support this shift rather than judge it.
