IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 8.0 Sample
Question type: Positive/Negative · 280 words
Model answer
In today's job market, being highly competitive is widely regarded as a key to success. While a degree of competition can bring out the best in people, I believe that the growing emphasis on fierce rivalry is more negative than positive for both individuals and society.
Admittedly, competition has certain advantages. It motivates employees to work harder, set ambitious goals and continually improve their skills. At the level of society, competitive companies tend to innovate faster, producing better products at lower prices. For example, sales teams that compete for bonuses often achieve higher targets than those with fixed salaries.
However, excessive competitiveness can seriously damage individuals' well-being. Workers who constantly compare themselves with colleagues may suffer from anxiety and burnout, and many sacrifice their health and family life in order to stay ahead. In some countries, a culture of long working hours has led to rising rates of depression and even deaths from overwork, a heavy price to pay for professional success.
Moreover, a highly competitive environment can undermine teamwork, which is essential in modern workplaces. When employees see one another as rivals, they become reluctant to share knowledge or help struggling colleagues, so the organisation as a whole becomes less efficient. On a wider scale, a society that measures worth only by winning may widen inequality and erode trust between people. Many successful technology firms, in fact, owe their achievements to collaboration rather than internal rivalry, as their best ideas often emerge from open discussion among teams.
In conclusion, although healthy competition can drive personal growth and innovation, the current obsession with being highly competitive harms workers' health and weakens cooperation. I therefore consider it a largely negative trend.
